สำนักงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม ในฐานะองค์กรภาครัฐที่มีภารกิจในการสนับสนุนและส่งเสริมศิลปะร่วมสมัยในประเทศไทย ได้ริเริ่มจัดมหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติในรูปแบบการแสดงศิลปะสองปีครั้ง หรือที่รู้จักกันอย่างกว้างขวางในคำศัพท์ภาษาอิตาลีว่า ‘เบียนนาเล่’ ภายใต้ชื่อ “ไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่ (Thailand Biennale)” สิ่งที่ทำให้ไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่แตกต่างจากมหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติอื่น ๆ ทั่วโลก ได้แก่ การเปลี่ยนจังหวัดที่จัดแสดงนิทรรศการในทุกครั้ง โดยสามจังหวัดแรกที่ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดไทยแลนด์เบียนนาเล่เป็นจังหวัดนำร่องที่มีศักยภาพในการเข้าร่วมโครงการ “เมืองศิลปะ” ของกระทรวงวัฒนธรรม คือ จังหวัดกระบี่ (พ.ศ. 2561) จังหวัดนครราชสีมา หรือโคราช (พ.ศ. 2564) และล่าสุด ได้แก่ จังหวัดเชียงราย (พ.ศ. 2566)

As the commissioner, the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture envisions the Thailand Biennale as a tool to encourage the development of Thai contemporary art and to inspire the creativity of emerging artists, as well as to strengthen curatorial practices. Most importantly, the Thailand Biennale intends to be a key factor to add intrinsic and economic value to art and culture. We are certain that the exhibition will result in increased artistic collaborations and public recognition of the true significance and relevance of art and culture in contemporary society, hence fulfilling our vision and mission.
