PLUVIOPHILE, an immersive and participatory art exhibition presents the works by artists from PATANI (the Deep South of Thailand) concerning contemporary memories in the area often viewed by outsiders as issues of unrest caused by political, religious, social, and economical complexity. This exhibition hence intends to present it through another perspective about ‘stories amidst rainy seasons as contemporary memories’ of ordinary people who experience various situations in real lives, as though living under circumstances determined by something or someone.

“While these contemporary memories are being introduced in the northernmost province, Chiang Rai, which has already switched to winter, the southernmost region is still experiencing a prolonged rainy season.

The unkindness of the seasons and climate with specific traits in each area, region, and country pretends to play the role of ‘human destiny determiner’ influencing people’s way of life, attitude, and social conditions while surviving and struggling amidst various limitations. It motivates each individual to record their memories in any place, any form, perhaps an imaginary inscription or a statement conveyed through different processes and reactions. These records of contemporary history and memory are eventually absorbed as part of ‘counter-movement’ to social reality, and divided into history of personal memories, social memories, and non-mainstream history. Such a ‘history of countermovement’ is inevitably inscribed, partly connoted via the work of artists from Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat who were born, grew up and live amidst the ever-changing conditions.

PLUVIOPHILE invites viewers from around the world to participate, learn and share life amongst the tropical monsoon climate in the three southern border provinces, where there is continuous rain and its amount is usually higher than in other regions of Thailand. The rainy season has thus become the familiar season. The long continuous rainfalls also create adaptation, while some people may sit and wait for the season to end. Some may even observe with hope that the unrest doesn't happen on a rainy day?
