About the speaker

Dr. Anthony Lovenheim Irwin is a scholar of Asian religions with a specialty in the religion and culture of northern Thailand. He first came to Chiang Rai in 2006, and since then has worked heavily on the nineteenth and early-twentieth-century history of the city. He primarily writes about the importance of craftspeople as central figures in the transmission and definition of religious traditions and communities. His research has received funding from the American Council of Learned Societies, The US Fulbright Program, and the Australian National Research Council. He has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Michigan, Cornell University, and Siena College.

Phrae Pro-Democracy Network (established in 2020) emerged amidst cheers after years of suppressed voices and people's rights being curtailed by the National Peacekeeping Council. Situated in the politically significant city of Phrae, where numerous stories are buried in history, a group of individuals has joined this movement. Their objective is not only to end dictatorial authoritarian rule but also to instigate a lasting change in mindset. Consequently, they have initiated a community-based liquor production project as a serious business. This project challenges both the monopoly of capital in the liquor market and reflects a spirit of resistance against the entrenched power structures in Phrae.
