Our project at Thailand Biennale includes a religious ceremony to chant the requiem for the ancestors of Tai Yuan to establish a connection between our present selves and those who have passed away, rooted in human belief in unseen entities. Performing this religious ceremony is therefore not merely an expression of respect for one's ancestors, but also a platform for creating collective memories and a gathering of Taiyuan Society Thailand. The ceremony holds symbolic meaning, allows us to return to our geographic area and reconnect with the original historical community.
For the afternoon program, there will be “Ethnics and Diaspora” roundtable talk session by representatives of the Taiyuan Society of Thailand and scholars, namely Sorayut Aiemueayut, anthropologist, Boonsong Chuajetton and Supan Thasan, representatives of Chiang Saen scholars, moderate by Jiradej Meemalai (representative of Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture)
Ritual Ceremony and Talk Session Schedule
09:00 - 10:00: Funeral shroud chant ceremony of Dr. Udom Somporn, the deceased Tai Yuan scholar, former president of the Taiyuan Society of Thailand.
- Carrying his heirloom-belonging to the ceremony by Mallika Somporn (daughter)
- Funeral shroud chant ceremony (religious ceremony), in cooperation with the Taiyuan Society of Thailand from 10 provinces.
- The ceremony includes chanting requiem to dedicate merit to the deceased Tai Yuan ancestors by 6 monks.
- Followed by offering a sermon.
13:00 - 15:00: Tai Yuan Return Talk “Ethnics and Diaspora”

About Baan Noorg
Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture

Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts and Culture (Baan Noorg or บ้านนอก; noun: countryside or rural area), is a non-profit, artist-run initiative, with a fundamental strategy for community development; it is also a service-provider for artistic practice. It is located in Nongpho district, Ratchaburi and was founded by artists jiandyin (Jiradej Meemalai and Pornpilai Meemalai) in 2011, with jiandyin, Lo Shih Tung, Hsu Chia Wei and Sakarin Krue-On as its board of committees. It aims to determine the possibilities for exchange, integration and co-existence within the community — locally and globally, and to build up community sustainability according to the group’s slogan: Baan Noorg is Future is Now.
Its main programs include day OFF LABoratory (OFF LAB), an alternative interdisciplinary art and community-as-case study program, organized biennially, based on post-studio and participatory practices, NongpoKiDdee (NPKD), and NPKD Social Enterprise aims to cultivate awareness towards cultural identity, community knowledge, resourcing, and environmental consciousness, and thereby encourage the local community members to become agents and co-create their own cultural-political capital.
