Imhathai Suwatthanasilp

Thailand

b. 1981, Bangkok, Thailand
Lives and works in Lamphun, Thailand

Imhathai Suwatthanasilp is known for using human hair as the main material to create her works, relating hair to the human experience through tactility and emotion. Suwatthanasilp’s practice is an exploration of gender, violence, mortality morality, belief, and ritual—which shape the character and behaviors of Thai society.

Her work emerges from two formative experiences: First when her father cut his hair to give to her and her sisters in 2003. And second, her passion for crochet was cultivated since she was ten years old. As an artist, she has expanded her interest to a wider variety of forms while retaining a keen interest in fragility and natural materials.
