Lives and works in Mayotte
Nathalie Muchamad was born in Kanaky (New Caledonia) and is now based in Mayotte. Her Javanese and Kanaky heritage inspires a line of questioning in her practice around the deconstruction of identity and the quest for historical memory. Through textile, video, drawing, text, and installation, Muchamad explores a connected and multipolar world through her relation to multiple geographies. She focuses on the role of commodity trade and her family history of displacement, through the historical lens of colonialism and the European slave trade in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Grace Gloria Denis, has researched the role of salicornia and ylang ylang under the umbrella of the Food Art Research Network. Her works have been presented at the Asian Art Biennale (Taichung, 2024), the Busan Biennale (2024), the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2022), and as part of the Disobedience Archive at the 17th Istanbul Biennale (2022).
